By Guest Author: Larry F Mohr ![]() Did you know there is a revolutionary approach to dramatically fix the look of old, cracked, and unsightly concrete? It doesn't matter how big the surface is, whether it is inside or out, a decorative concrete overlay can give the consumer a gorgeous new look directly on the existing concrete surface. Ripping out old concrete is quite costly and an extremely tiresome and messy process. For example, if ripping out an old concrete pool deck, the crew must be able to navigate around plumbing and electrical work underground, all the while protecting the pool itself. Furthermore, massive, heavy chunks of old concrete must be transported and disposed of. This type of mass quickly piles up in landfills, just adding to the vast overflow of waste across our nation. Lastly, once the old concrete is removed, the surface will still need to be replaced. ![]() Decorative concrete overlays utilize cement based polymer mixes that are applied to a properly prepared existing concrete surface. Using a concrete overlay allows limitless texture, pattern, and color choices and can mimic the look of stone, slate, wood, tile, etc. That's correct; practically any look desired can be created on an existing concrete slab. As long as your existing slab is deemed "sound concrete" by a trained contractor, you can start picking your pattern! If the existing concrete surface has fairly minimal damage, a thin overlay topcoat can be applied, depending on desired texture. A basic decorative concrete coating using a splatter or knockdown texture adds depth and color. If the concrete has significant cracks, pitted areas, and sections that need leveling, one would most likely choose a thicker overlay coating. This type of coating would be applied slightly thicker and would be an excellent choice for the look of stamped concrete. ![]() Considering these challenging, economical times, it is extremely important to touch on the cost effectiveness of a concrete overlay. Most decorative concrete overlay systems can be completed for the cost of ripping out old concrete. YES, in most cases, you can have a brand new, gorgeous, decorative surface, for a fraction of the cost to rip out and replace a new slab. In conclusion, we bid farewell to conventional thinking. No longer must consumers live with ugly, stained, and pitted concrete. No longer must contractors endure the daunting task of ripping out massive pieces of unsightly concrete, causing more over-flow in our landfills. Decorative concrete overlays are the most unique, attractive, and practical way to restore old concrete. Whether it's an interior or exterior slab, residential or industrial, there is a concrete overlay solution to meet your needs. Larry Mohr

It's good to know that an overlay coat can be applied if the concrete has minimal damage. According to my knowledge, it's sometimes a good idea to use a concrete grinding service to prepare the damaged material for resurfacing. Concrete scabbing is also beneficial since it leaves a rough surface for new material to bond to more easily.
