Industrial areas are one of the most dangerous. If you own or work in a building that is used for industrial purposes, then you know that you must always be on the lookout in order to keep yourself and other employees safe. There are certain things that you must always be certain of in order to keep the business running smoothly and as safely as possible under your watch.

Keep all areas free of debris. Anyone can trip or slip because of debris lying around in work zones. Debris can get sucked into expensive equipment which can make it malfunction or stop working entirely. This can present a hazard to any employee who has to work with the machine. Make sure everyone keeps their work zones clean and free of any debris. Provide ways to clean up the debris and places to properly dispose of it.

Clearly mark the floor for safety zones. People may not be aware of certain places they should never stand or walk. Heavy equipment may be used in those areas, and if someone is caught unaware that he or she is in danger, there could be real trouble. Make sure areas are marked with signs and even appropriate tape on the floor. Mark certain zones according to their level of danger and make sure each employee knows where he or she is supposed to be and which zones they should stay out of.

Only allow heavy equipment in certain areas. There are certain places in the building where no heavy equipment should be placed or operated. Heavy equipment can injure people very easily if it is not controlled properly or used for the right reasons. Mark these zones appropriately and ensure that all of your employees know where heavy equipment is to be stored and operated.

Make sure that all employees have proper safety training and equipment. No one should be allowed to work with certain equipment if they have not been properly trained, and no one should ever enter certain areas without the proper safety equipment. All employees should have access to the right tools needed in order to do their job. All tools and safety equipment should be in good working order and regularly inspected.

Do not allow workers to engage in dangerous horseplay. Sometimes people want to have a little fun and may start joking around or not paying attention to the job at hand. This is never safe in an industrial facility. Remind employees that they will have time for their horseplay on a break and where it is safe. Reinforce these rules when necessary as per your own company policy. Set a good example by being serious and paying attention to your own work.

Do not allow unauthorized visitors in the building. Occasionally, someone may stop by to visit the facility in order to see an employee or just to see what is going on. Never allow anyone who is not a trained worker in unauthorized areas of the building. They could become seriously injured, distract workers, or damage equipment or products. Escort them from the area and have clear signs in place that unauthorized visitors are not allowed.

Make sure all employees are aware of your particular safety rules. Your policies should clearly state what is expected of the employees and what will happen if an employee behaves inappropriately. Every employee should be trained properly on important safety procedures and what to do in an emergency. Everyone should sign these rules to acknowledge that they understand them, and you will rest easy knowing that your employees are serious about safety.
